parameter extended a particular aspect of my practice in direct response to the history of Conical gallery. At thispoint in my practice, one of the ways in which I engaged with the representation of place was by using the ever-finer resolution of high definition video. I scanned environments at a level of detail that hovered at the edge of visibility to the naked eye in order to offer such a surfeit of visual information that video’s realist function was overwhelmed – beating video at its own game if you will. This project extended my engagement with the social and/or natural histories of place/s as a means to explore their construction at the intersection of a variety of social narratives. Conical had a unique history of encouraging artists to engage with the specifics of its architecture such that this history of engagement is what Conical had become, the sum of those responses. It is in the spirit of this collective project that I shot details of the physical infrastructure of Conical to create the images for parameter: the windowsills, the louvers, the floorboards, the fireplace, the walls. Within the context of Conical’s final year of operation, parameter functioned as a critical reflection upon this place and community of practice; contributing to my ongoing work with the potential for the moving image to represent accurately and the paradoxical relationship of more information resulting in less knowledge. The work was funded by Arts Victoria peer review funding process though its support of Conical’s program.
